Lettuce 'Forellenschluss' is a childhood favorite of mine because I liked the sound of the name. The name of this Austrian heirloom means "speckled trout," but there is nothing fishy about the taste of the green and red, crisp leaves.

Sow lettuce seeds on the surface of the soil in early spring and lightly cover with soil. Thin seedlings to 8 inches apart. Full sun to part shade.
